Recognize ADHD Symptoms in Toddlers

Seeing an active child surely parents feel happy. However, if hyperactivity must be watched out because it may be that your child is experiencing attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder better known as ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). To ensure this is not easy because toddlers in general tend to find it difficult to focus. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), ADHD in addition to being seen at the age of toddlers will also affect one's behavior when reaching adolescence — even adults. This is why it is important to recognize the signs of ADHD in children as early as possible. Here are the symptoms of ADHD that parents should be aware of.

Is it ADHD?
According to the Mayo Clinic, children under five with age ranges from 2-3 years can show symptoms of ADHD. The three main signs of ADHD in children over 3 years old are lack of attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity - although children without ADHD also exhibit this behavior. If symptoms continue for more than six months and affect your child's ability to participate in activities appropriate to his age, then ADHD can be diagnosed. And, special attention is needed before diagnosing children under 5 years of age with ADHD, especially if the doctor has considered giving treatment. The diagnosis in toddlers is best issued by a child psychiatrist or pediatrician who specializes in behavior and development.

There are a number of behaviors that can indicate that your child is having problems with attention. In school-age children the signs include the inability to focus on an activity, difficulty completing tasks before getting bored, difficulty listening due to disturbances, as well as problems following instructions and processing information. However, this behavior can be normal in toddlers, so parents must understand it.

Hyperactivity vs. impulsive
In the past, ADHD was called ADD or Attention Deficit Disorder. As reported by the Mayo Clinic, the medical community now prefers to call the condition ADHD because the disorder often includes hyperactive and impulsive components. This is seen when a diagnosis is done in preschool children.

Symptoms of hyperactivity include:
  • Too restless and stretched.
  • Having an inability to sit still when activities that demand calm, such as eating or listening to stories read to him.
  • Continue to talk and make excessive noises.
  • Run from one toy to another, or keep moving.
Impulsive symptoms include:
  • Showing great impatience with others.
  • Refusing to wait their turn when playing with other children.
  • Interrupts when other people talk.
  • Make comments at the wrong time.
  • Having difficulty controlling their emotions.
  • Prone to emotional outbursts.
  • Interrupts when other people play, don't ask permission to join
Once again all of the above behaviors are normal in toddlers and need new attention if they show extreme conditions when compared to children their age.

Do not be Wrong!
As reported by Healthline.com, the Kennedy Krieger Institute (KKI) has also identified several other ADHD warning signs in children between the ages of 3-4 years. Other signs of ADHD include aggressive behavior while playing, being careless about strangers, behavior that is too brave, endangering yourself or others because you don't know fear, and the inability to jump using one foot at 4 years of age. KKI noted that children in this age group were often injured due to running too fast or not following instructions.

Misdiagnosis of ADHD may occur because most toddlers lack focus, have excessive energy, and are impulsive. Sometimes even parents and teachers easily 'attach' ADHD symptoms to other problems. Toddlers who don't pay enough attention and can't sit quietly in preschool don't mean they have ADHD, while hyperactive children may just have discipline problems.

If Father and Mother are worried about your child showing signs of ADHD, you should consult a pediatrician. Even though there is no cure for ADHD, medication and lifestyle changes can help alleviate your child's symptoms and give them a chance for success in the future.
